Openings for Volunteer Positions with Shanti Bhavan, Tamil Nadu, South India

Teacher Volunteers:

Positions are available with Shanti Bhavan, a free world-class boarding school for children from poor families. Teacher volunteers are needed throughout the year for academic subjects such as Math, Science and English, and for non-academic subjects such as music, art, drama and dance. Minimum duration for volunteer service is 4 weeks, and maximum is usually 1 year.

Goal: To assist the teaching staff; to introduce children and staff to fresh and innovative curricular approaches and global standards while preserving the best of Indian education and culture; ideas and approaches will first meet the approval of the principal.

Qualifications: Degree and/or certificate of eligibility to teach elementary, middle or high school; experience in teaching and administering school programs; students studying for teaching professions.

Duties: Teaching academic and/or non-academic subjects to children ages 4 -16. Take part in other school activities.

Amenities: Meals (mostly vegetarian) and good living arrangements at the school (in very hygienic modern facilities) will be provided free of charge. Volunteers who choose to spend week-ends off-campus will have to make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and food while off-campus. Occasional trips to Bangalore will be provided free of cost. Volunteers who spend more than 6 months at Shanti Bhavan may be given a modest stipend to cover some of the costs associated with trips to the city and travel within India during vacations. Airfare to India and back is not offered.

Volunteers as Educational Assistants:

Qualification: University students or professionals with backgrounds in music, visual arts, acting, dance or strong background in science, math and English.

Duties: assisting staff with the care and education of children ages 4-16 in the elementary, middle and high school.
